Consistent labeling in the food industry
Matthews Marking Systems worked with SchapfenMühle to develop a solution built on four key pillars, each supporting end-to-end marking across the operation.
From flour bags to finished pallets, SchapfenMühle relies on Matthews technology for consistent, traceable labeling.
The Challenge
The initial situation at SchapfenMühle reflected a common issue in operations that have grown over time:
• Empty bags needed to be clearly labeled before filling to prevent mix-ups.
• Small packages, such as flour or seed products, required high-resolution codes applied at speed on the production line.
• Pallets of up to 33 bags needed clear labeling both at the base and after being wrapped in stretch film.
• At the same time, the solution had to integrate with existing production lines, connect with OEM equipment and IT systems, and remain simple for operators to use.
This made the challenge more than just technical. It was also about coordination: how to build a solution that meets all requirements while making day-to-day operations easier for the people running the line.

The Solution
Matthews Marking Systems worked with SchapfenMühle to develop a solution built on four key pillars, each supporting end-to-end marking across the operation.
The starting point: Bag labeling with T63
The process began with empty 25 kg bags. The T63 thermal transfer labeling system reliably applies large-format labels with precision and durability, while remaining easy to maintain. This established a consistent foundation for clear labeling from the start.

Precision in the smallest detail: L-Series for small packages
Next, attention turned to small-format packaging across a range of product weights. The L-Series (L12) was used to deliver high-resolution codes at line speed. As packages move along the conveyor, an encoder and photocell work together to trigger printing at exactly the right moment. The result is sharp, legible codes, even for the smallest details, which is critical when detailed product information is required.

The big stage: Pallet labeling with FlexWipe
Once the bags are stacked onto pallets and wrapped in stretch film, the FlexWipe pallet labeler takes over. It applies large-format labels to two sides of each pallet, ensuring visibility and consistency. The system integrates directly into the line, with data pulled from SchapfenMühle’s NAVISION system to keep labeling accurate and up to date.

The foundation: Pallet foot labeling with T63
An additional T63 system ensures each pallet is labeled at the base before wrapping. This enables early identification in the process, improving traceability and reducing risk in downstream logistics.
Everything in sight: MPERIA®
At the center of the solution is the MPERIA® controller. It connects all systems, manages print data, and gives operators a clear, unified interface. Whether marking bags, packages, or pallets, everything runs through a single platform for greater consistency and control.
The Results
The collaboration between Matthews Marking Systems and SchapfenMühle shows how technology and tradition can go hand in hand:
- Clarity and security: Each packaging unit is clearly marked – from the bag to the pallet.
- Efficiency in everyday life: Employees benefit from ease of operation and reduced downtime.
- Transparency in the supply chain: Traceability is guaranteed at all times.
- Future-proofing: Thanks to MPERIA®, the solution is scalable and ready for future requirements.
For SchafenMühle, this means less effort, more safety and labeling that matches the quality of their products.
